I was especially annoyed with a part in the book where Cee Cee takes off to be with a man who is willing to take a break from "#$"$ing 12-year-old boys" to be with her. I couldn't see how these two women could be friends. ![]() In the film, Bette Midler brought a genuineness and likeability to Cee Cee which I did not find in the character in the book. I found her weak, powerless, needy and wholly uninteresting.Cee Cee was just too much. But my main problem with this character was her character. The connotations for the name "Hillary" include - refined, educated and privileged. The screenwriter for the movie realized this. You can get a lot of mileage from a name. The main flaws had to do with the two main characters.I'll start with Bertie (Hillary in the film). It occurred to me that I had never read the book.I just finished the book and I have to say kudos to the screenwriters of the movie for fixing major flaws in the book. As usual, I got to the end and shed some tears and felt fully satisfied with the movie. I recently saw the movie,"Beaches" for the 3rd or 4th time. ![]()

![]() ![]() The Peninsula Campaign was General George McClellan’s ill-fated and tragicomic attempt to seize the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia. But when compared with Guelzo’s bracing new history (and yes, I know, the books were written at different times, about different battles), it’s hopelessly old fashioned. To the contrary, it is sturdy and dependable, just like the Honda Civic you drove back in high school. Stephen Sears’ To the Gates of Richmond, about George McClellan’s failed Peninsula Campaign of 1862, is not a bad book. It really isn’t fair that I read this book – and am now rating it – after having read Allen Guelzo’s Gettysburg: The Last Invasion. ![]() ![]() ![]() Then modern humans entered the biological scene. Change happened slowly and extinction was a rare occurrence. Since then, biological diversity slowly recovered, as new species of plants and animals evolved and covered the earth. There is also the fact that this “other heaven” had not been mentioned before this point.
